We're introducing the Global Age Mapping Integration (GAMI) dataset—a high-resolution global forest age distribution resource for 2010 and 2020.

Technical Overview

  • Resolution: 100 meters (superior to MPI-BGC forest age products)
  • Methodology:

    • Utilizes XGBoost machine learning algorithms
    • Trained on >40,000 forest inventory plots
    • Integrates biomass, canopy height, remote sensing (Landsat), and climate data
    • Employs multi-model ensembles to quantify random and epistemic uncertainty
    • Provides statistical metrics and confidence intervals

Data Specifications

  • Format: NetCDF (.nc)
  • Coverage: Global
  • Size: 200+ GB (remote preview recommended)

NetCDF Viewing Tools

Common applications for NetCDF data:

  1. QGIS: Native NetCDF support via Layer → Add Layer → Add Mesh Layer
  2. ArcGIS Pro: Multidimensional Tools toolbox
  3. Python: xarray or netCDF4 libraries
  4. Panoply (NASA): Cross-platform visualization

Dataset untested locally due to size constraints. User feedback welcomed.
