In the previous article GIS Professional Salary Survey (2024 Edition), we conducted a survey on GIS professionals' income levels. We sincerely thank all participants – we received 1,462 valid responses, representing the largest participation in our surveys to date. This sample size of approximately 1,500 responses provides meaningful insights into the current income landscape of our "sunrise industry".

Survey Findings

As shown below:

Experience Distribution:

  • Over 50% of respondents have 1-3 years of experience
  • Approximately 40% are mid-career professionals (3-10 years experience)
  • Only 10% have over 10 years of experience

Income Distribution:

  • 53% earn 50,000-150,000 CNY annually (monthly equivalent: 4,000-12,000 CNY)
  • Under 30% earn 150,000-300,000 CNY annually
  • 13% earn below 50,000 CNY annually
  • Top earners exceeding 300,000 CNY annually represent a small minority

Regional Distribution:

  • 56% work in tier-2 cities
  • 28% work in tier-1 cities
  • Minimal presence in tier-3 cities and below

This pattern likely reflects GIS job concentration, with many companies establishing R&D centers in tier-2 cities due to lower operational costs compared to tier-1 cities.

Employer Types:

  • Majority work in private enterprises
  • State-owned enterprises and institutions account for nearly 40%
  • Foreign companies and government positions are rare

Career Outlook:

  • 50% reported stagnant wages
  • 25% received raises, while another 25% experienced salary reductions
  • Widespread career anxiety exists within the industry

In summary: Typical GIS graduates find employment in private enterprises within tier-2 cities, earn approximately 100,000 CNY annually (monthly equivalent: 8,000 CNY), and express concern about career stagnation. This profile aligns with 80% of the author's post-graduation experience.

Comparison with Other Majors

Data from the 2023 China Undergraduate Employment Report shows:

  • 2022 undergraduate average monthly salary: 5,990 CNY
  • Top-earning majors significantly outpace GIS salaries

The income gap between GIS and high-demand majors is approximately 2,000 CNY monthly.

Key Takeaways

Can GIS lead to high earnings?

Compared to domestic markets:

  • GIS salaries trail those in high-demand fields
  • Specialization in development-oriented roles (GIS programming) yields better returns
  • International opportunities offer significantly higher compensation:

Note: Entry-level salaries in developed markets often exceed mid-career earnings in domestic markets.

To pursue international opportunities:

  1. Master global GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Pro)
  2. Develop advanced English proficiency
  3. Obtain necessary emigration qualifications

Regarding true financial freedom:
No professional field alone guarantees wealth. Financial success depends on personal capabilities, investment acumen, educational background, strategic vision, and often, fortuitous timing. Even in high-paying fields, salaries primarily cover living expenses. If we knew the secret to wealth, would we still be writing about GIS salaries?
