Recent work involving IFC standards led me to Autodesk's official documentation, which I'm sharing here:
Understanding BIM and IFC
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a model-based process enabling architects, engineers, clients, and contractors to design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure. It digitally represents an asset's physical and functional characteristics. Key Autodesk tools for BIM include Revit (architecture) and Civil 3D (infrastructure).
IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) emerged through the Industry Alliance Interoperability (founded 1996) to enable openBIM workflows across different software platforms. This vendor-neutral international standard facilitates data exchange for:
- Architectural design
- Construction planning
- Facility maintenance
- Operations management
It provides a standardized digital description of built environments (buildings and infrastructure), supporting cross-software collaboration.
